I wish you and your family health, peace, and love in 2009.

Happy New Year!

I am looking forward to another busy and exciting year in first grade. Be sure to check out my math, science, and language arts links located on the left side of my website. These will give you lots of information on our curriculum and keep you up to date with what your child is learning in our classroom

We have an afternoon snack instead of a morning snack. This allows us to have an uninterrupted morning ELA block. Please be sure you child has had breakfast before they come to school. We eat lunch at 11:00 each day. They can also buy breakfast in our cafeteria before school starts each morning.

In our reading program, Reading Street, we will start unit two week six on Monday, January 5th. The theme for unit two is Communities. The concept question for this unit is "What is a Community?" The question for week six is "How is a community of insects like a community of people?" The story we will read is "Honey Bees". The phonics target skill for the week is long -e (e,ee). The comprehension skill is reality stories. Spelling words for this week will be sent home on Monday, January 5th. You can also go to my spelling word link for a complete list of spelling words for each week and my concept question link, ELA link, and amazing word link to find out more information for each week. The next spelling test will be on Friday, January 9th.

In our math program, Everyday Math, we finished the first unit on Tuesday, September 30th. We started the second unit on Wednesday, October 1st. We are currently on Unit 2: Everyday Uses of Numbers. Please go to my math link located on the left side of my website to find out what we are learning in this volume and unit.

In science we are starting our second unit this week. This unit is Pebbles, Sand, and Silt. Please go to my science link to see what we will be doing in this unit.

Please be sure your child is dressed appropriatly for outdoor recess. You might want to send a sweater or light jacket for your child to wear inside as the temperature in the classroom varies daily! Be sure to write your child's first and last name inside their jackets, sweaters, mittens, and hats. This will make it much easier locating lost items.
