Happy New Year Everyone!
I am looking forward to our return to school and our "everyday" schedule, aren't you? On Monday we will begin our second week in Unit 3 of our Reading Street program. The story we will be reading is "Dear Juno". Please check on the tabs to the left of this message to find the spelling words, high frequency words, and other information about what we will be learning during this week. Day One will begin on Monday, Day Two will be on Tuesday along with our dictation test, and Day Five will fall on Friday when we will be taking our spelling test. Remember: it is important to study our new words EVERY day, to retain the skill being taught, not to just learn the words to do well on the test on Friday. With this spiral method of learning, we will be revisiting skills in following units, so I consider each week's
lesson to be a building block on our journey to setting down a solid and firm foundation of reading skills for lifelong learning.
In Math we will be working on Lesson 5.5 starting on Monday. Be sure to click on the Everyday Math tab on this page to find out more about this program and the skills we are learning!
If you have not had the opportunity to do so yet, please be sure to attend one of the training sessions being held here at Hill-Roberts in order to volunteer in the classroom. I am looking forward to having you in my classroom soon!
Be sure to check out the "Top Ten" tab on this page. You will find ten ways to help you "raise a reader". Two good resources to learn more about the joys of reading are Mem Fox's "Reading Magic: Why Reading Aloud To Our Children Will Change Their Lives Forever" and Jim Trelease's "The Read-Aloud Handbook".
Be sure to have your student fill in their reading calendar each night as part of their homework assignment. Results of the December reading calendars will be available on Friday. Did we break the 8,000 minute mark?
Stay tuned to find out!
