For the Week of January 5, 2009:
Happy New Year everyone and Welcome Back! We have a new start to everything this week so I hope that you are well rested and ready!
We are beginning Unit 5 this week in Everyday Math.
There are three main areas of focus in the unit:
ü To extend the previous lessons on base-ten place-value system to whole numbers through the millions and to decimals through the thousandths.
ü To apply these concepts when reading, writing, comparing, and ordering whole numbers and decimals.
ü To use whole numbers and decimals in real-life contexts.
We will begin this week in Reading Street with our second story in our People and Nature unit, Pushing up the Sky, by Joseph Bruchac. It is a play that uses Native American folklore to explain aspects of nature. Mr. Bruchac has written many books regarding Native Americans and their customs and culture. Check out some of his other stories. I have many in the classroom.
Once again, my “housekeeping” items for the week:
· Unless it is bitterly cold or inclement, we go outdoors for recess everyday. Please make sure your child comes to school with weather appropriate items such as a coat, hat and gloves.
· We have snack everyday. Please have your child bring a healthy snack. I usually have extra for those children who may forget.
· appreciated!
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. Have a great week!
