Lesson Plan

Introduction:  Students will gather for a review of "Measuring with Paces and Steps" lesson (taught the day before this lesson). Give students an overview of today's activity and the tools needed to complete the lesson.  Review with students how a line plot graph is helpful in recording data.

Goal:  Students will learn to gather data and understand the translation to an equivalent measurement.

Equipment: Five (5) laptop computers, projector,  pencil, and a recording sheet

Activity

1. A quick check if students understand the concept of matching the colors on the spinner to an equivalent measurement.

2. In groups of five, students will spin the online spinner (found on the left of this lesson website) twenty times and record their data in the Recording Area of the data sheet.

3.  Students will meet as a class and create a full class set of data using the group found data.  Students will complete the class data area on the data sheet.  (Hint: every student should have the same data in the class data section)

4.  The class data will be displayed using one laptop and projection system.  The classroom teacher will use the application Microsoft Excel to create a spreadsheet displaying the class data.

5.  Generate a plot line graph using the class data

Lesson Extension: Find one item this weekend that equals each of you found data measurement

Example: 5 baby steps = dish washer, 10 walking steps = swing set
